Vigilante Parade Cultural Guidelines
Helena Public Schools Indian Education For All
Please do not represent American Indians or any other minority in distorted, negative ways by stereotyping. A stereotype is an exaggerated image of minority people. Prejudiced people who are highly negative in judgment toward a minority group will discriminate against others by using stereotyping.
-
Examples of stereotyping of American Indians from previous Vigilante Parades include:
-
Brown face paint, painted faces and black wigs
-
Inappropriate and offensive costumes
-
Dancing and drumming in a Hollywood style
-
Representing American Indians as lazy or blood thirsty
-
American Indians assaulting women
The Indian Education For All Program encourages historic accuracy and respect for American Indian peoples and cultures. Please feel free to contact Amanda Walking-Child (Helena High, Capital High and PAL Indian Education Mentor) or Matt Reyant (CHS) at Capital High) with any questions or concerns. Call 324-2598 or 324-2237 or make contact with her at either high school.
